A recent study found that 255 colleges and universities in the U.S. offer advanced degrees or certificates that involve some aspect of philanthropy/nonprofit studies. The article, Getting Advanced Degrees was published by The Nonprofit Times.
Of the 255 institutions, 27 include some type of course work in a Ph.D. program and at least 137 colleges offer various master's degrees, including MA or MS in philanthropic studies. The study also found that institutions are supportive of nonprofit executives who want to further their training.
So how much do these programs cost? At the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University you can earn a Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies for about $23,000 (out-of-state tuition). So is it worth the investment? But what about an MBA or a law degree? Which is better? And will non-profit employers be willing to pay for it? Keep checking back with me for updates because I'm curious myself and will look into this....
