There are concerns from the Chinese community that the wealthy Chinese are not supporting the needs of new immigrants in New York, according to an article published in the International Herald Tribune. In Manhattan’s Chinatown, almost a third of residents live in poverty; 40% of them are children and 30% are the elderly. Only 7% of the households receive public aid. Unfortunately, wealthy Chinese are giving to mainstream causes instead of Chinatown-based charities.
The article discusses some of the perceptions within the different ethnic communities and giving trends of new immigrants. Many are looking towards the younger generation to bridge the divide.
