~ Chinese Newcomers Services saluted Hon. Irene Yee-Riley and an anonymous donor for personally donating more than $10,000 in their April Radiothon during their annual charity ball. The organization provides multilingual services for Chinese immigrants adapting to life in the U.S.
~ Verizon Wireless, throught its Wireless HopeLine(R) Program, awarded over $43,000 to the Asian Women's Shelter, Asian Americans for Community Involvement, and Chinese Community Health Resource Center for its work with victims of domestic violence and prevention. ~ The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation awarded $2 million to the Museum of Chinese in America. The Museum is trying to raise $15 million to build a new home. As of October this year, they have raised $7 million. Designed by architect Maya Lin, the 14,000-square-foot space is scheduled to open next fall.
~ Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics, Inc. (LEAP) received $75,000 from the Cultures of Giving Fund, an initiative of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The funds support the development and dissemination of training tools and other services to help community-based organizations engage donors and strengthen their connections to social change issues.
~ Safeco Insurance Foundation entered the philanthropic scene this month by announcing $500,000 grants to three community organizations. Wing Luke Museum in Seattle received one of the grants to help convert the 1910 Chinatown International District Hotel into its new home.
~ The Asian Art Museum received a $1 million gift from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to launch "The Bridge Program," a series of initiatives that will expand access to high-quality K-12 teaching materials about Asia.
