The Chronicle of Philanthropy (Oct 18, 2007), in a pullout section on diversity, noted that the nonprofit sector is still grappling with issues of diversity and inclusion.
* 82% of chief executives in a national survey of 2,000 nonprofit leaders are white (CompassPoint & Agnes E. Meyer Foundation (2006)).
* 94.2 % of chief executives at grant-making organizations are white (Council on Foundations (2006)).
* 86% of board members are white (Urban Institute (2007)).
In response to the lack of diversity and leadership in the sector, Gene Takagi, an attorney representing tax exempt organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area, is putting together a small group of minority and emerging nonprofit professsionals who are interested in meeting weekly to discuss legal issues of relevance to nonprofit managers. These educational and networking sessions are worth more than $780. However, he will be providing these services for free. If you are interested, please email him directly at gene@attorneyfornonprofits.com.
Gene's Nonprofit Law blog also contains details of the USF Nonprofit Management Gathering (Oct 18, 2007).
