Earlier this month, several friends and I helped with the Chefs Without Borders' Holiday Food Drive.
The drive brings together chefs from the Asian Chefs Association, instructors from the California Culinary Academy, students from the Academy, and community volunteers.
Everyone contributes their time and culinary expertise in preparing gourmet Asian Fusion Turkey meals for the needy and homeless during the holiday season.
As volunteers we cut, trim, peel, mash, wrap, clean and do whatever is needed to prepare the meal. I've been doing it for two years now and it has been a pleasure to work with so many talented folks with the same desire to help our community.
Besides providing a warm meal to those less fortunate, how many times in your life do you get to cook with some of the most amazing Asian chefs in the Bay Area (Chris Yeo from Straits Cafe, Khai Duong from Ana Mandara, Hung Le from the Three Seasons, Ty Mahler from Roy's, etc)? And to do it in the kitchens of the California Culinary Academy?!
Each year, we prepare and serve 2,000 hot meals at Glide Memorial Church and 1,000 meal boxes to after-school programs in various schools in San Francisco and home bound citizens.
Interested in volunteering next year? Check out the ACA website (late November/early December). On their website, you can also find the work of the Asian Chefs Foundation too.
