The Asian American Federation raised $275,000 over two years to meet the dollar for dollar challenge of the Cultures of Giving Fund. The matching grant was completed at the end of 2009. The Cultures of Giving Fund was established by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to empower emerging donor communities.
With the increase of funds for grantmaking, the Federation divided their Community Fund into three separate rounds. The first round of grants awarded $190,000 to 25 agencies for diverse programs supporting Asian American nonprofits that include advancing child welfare, sustaining classes for low-income immigrants, and agency capacity building projects.
The Community Fund's Allocations Committee included Alan Okada of Citi Foundation, Lisa Philp of JP Morgan Private Bank, Alison Yu of Hearst Foundation, and board members Sunil Wadhwa and Richard Hsia.
Sample grantees include: APEX, Asian & Pacific Islander Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Chhaya CDC, Coalition for Asian American Children & Families, Greater Chinatown Community Association, Korean American Community Center of New York, New York Asian Women's Center, and South Asian Youth Action.
